Ranking Rules

In the past 2 years, rankings were based on percentages, meaning percentages of teams entered in tournaments, percentages of games won, etc.

In this new formula instead of percentages, teams acquire points for playing, just like players do in some professional individual sports (tennis, golf, racing). This will be a year round ranking, so it will take into account matches played up to one year prior.

Teams will acquire points based on 2 categories: results at Nationals, and results in other tournaments or matches. The rankings will be based on the best 8 matches played with a tournament being worth 2 matches.

If a team plays a match, they will be awarded points based on strength of the opponent, and percentage of games/individual matches won. In the case of single gender matches, these will be worth half a match, and must be accompanied by another single gender match.

If a team plays in a tournament, they will be awarded points based on what “level” the tournament is and how they place. Section Championships also count as tournaments. Levels will be determined by the following:

LevelTotal TeamsUnique TeamsTeams in Top 40
520124
415103
31182
2861
1440

To be in a level, a tournament must fulfill at least 2 out of the 3 requirements. Teams will automatically get points for being in the tournament. The only exception to these is if a team finishes in the bottom 20%. If they do, they will only receive half the points for the level of play. Teams also get points for how well they perform in the tournament.

In addition to these best of 8 matches points, teams that compete in Nationals will receive points based on how well they perform.

Results of B teams in tournaments will be factored as well. If a 2nd or 3rd team finishes in the top 25% of the tournament, teams will receive extra points.
