Your schedule is complete, your practices are done, and finals are upon you. The last couple weeks of the semester are approaching. But have you prepared for next year?
May you be a senior or not, you still have to wind down this year, and make sure next year is just as successful as this one. Here are some things to remember:
A Proper Goodbye: One good thing to have is an Awards Night or “Fun Night” wherever it is you have your matches and practices (or day if the courts don’t have lights). If you have extra money in the bank, buy food, prizes, and giveaways to give away to the rest of your club. If you have a big club, you can have games and stations on each court. Awards are also something you may want to give out. You can give out everything from serious awards such as “Team MVP, Most Outstanding Player, and Most Improved Player” to wacky awards like “Most Likely to Show Up 2 Hours Late for a Match and Biggest Road Trip Snorer.
Website Updates: If you have a website, before you leave, make sure your website is updated to not only show what you have done this year, but your plans for next year as well. A lot of potential members look at the website over the summer, including high school seniors who want to join your club.
Contact Updates: Make sure all your “outside” contacts know who the contact for your club is next year. These include your USTA rep, and especially CollegeClubTennis.Com.
Officer Elections: Make sure you have a set leadership team before you’re done for the summer. This will create a smooth transition for the fall.
Asset Transfer: If you’re the one who stores all the hoppers, balls, apparel, etc, make sure you get it off your hands if you’re not in charge of the club next year.
Paperwork and Instructions: You may have a bunch of paperwork that the fall person may not. These includes thing such as liability waivers, officer reports, and facility request forms. Another thing to remember is that you may know a lot more than the person running the club next year knows such as setting up tournaments, contacting other teams, and buying apparel.
As a final remark, make sure you check your email in the summer. Many schools schedule matches months before the fall even starts. Plus, as I said before, there are plenty of people interested in the club for next year, as you should get quite a few emails about it even before schools start.
