Georgetown upsets UVA, VT to win USTA Championships: Mid-Atlantic

13 club teams converged on Charlottesville, VA on February 2nd to compete in the Mid-Atlantic Championships. On Saturday, teams were divided into 4 pools.

VCU had one of the tougher draws with Maryland William & Mary in their pool. They managed to pull through to advance to the Gold Bracket. UMBC also had a tough draw with Virginia Tech in their pool. "A few of our veteran players were unhappy that we had to play one of the toughest teams of the tournament in our first round match," says UMBC captain Alex Chan. "We had beaten VA Tech in the VA Falls Invitationals, but this time their team brought a few new people and they were just too strong." Virginia Tech won the match, but UMBC had the 2nd best winning percentage to make it to the Gold Bracket. Also advancing to Gold were Georgetown, UVA and Navy.

UVA and Virginia Tech received first round byes, with VCU facing Navy and Georgetown taking on a tough UMBC team. VCU managed Navy winning 30-18. In the second match, UMBC was down 10 going into mixed doubles. "Knowing that, our mix team of Jeff Ocker and Tiffany Hodges played one of their best mixed matches and manage to get a 5-0 lead before letting it slip a bit later on. Despite the set back, our mixed won 6-4 and that win got us into overtime, but it only took one game for Georgetown to claim victory over us," Chan said.

That brought a great semi-final. In the bottom half, a rested Virginia Tech dismissed VCU 28-17. In the other semi-final, Georgetown pulled out one of the biggest upsets of the year, beating UVA 25-23. Georgetown wasn't done though, as they still had Virginia Tech in the final. They managed to pull through with a second big win 25-17 to win their first Section Championship.

In consolations, UVA captured 3rd place with a win over VCU. Navy eeked out a close one against UMBC 23-22 in the 5th place match. In the Silver Bracket, Mary Washington made a run to beat George Washington in the finals 21-18.
