Penn State wins Battle of the Sections: A Northeast Region Event

Date: Sept. 15th-16th, 2007

Location: Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Flushing, NY

Format: WTT

Summary: Play started late on Saturday due to a soggy morning. However, all the teams chipped in to dry off courts so they could get started quickly. Using 16 courts across the complex, 16 teams from 4 USTA Sections competed. Due to repairs needing to be made on courts 5 and 12, teams were allowed to use Louis Armstrong Stadium and the Grandstands for matches throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, teams were divided into 4 pools based on Section and Placement in their Section Championships. After 8 hours of play on a slightly chilly and windy day, 8 teams advanced to a Gold Bracket, while the other 8 advanced to a Silver Bracket. The 8 Gold Bracket teams were Penn State, Delaware, Georgetown, Villanova, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Virginia, and Yale.

On Sunday, the day started with a group picture with everybody at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Play started shortly afterward, with Penn State, Villanova, Virginia Tech, and Virginia advancing to the semi-finals. Penn State advanced past Section-rival Villanova 26-17, while Virginia Tech beat their Section-rival Virginia 28-12. In a thrilling match, Penn State started the final down 12-3, losing the doubles matches. They then came back to sweep the singles and mixed doubles, winning the match 21-20.

Maryland beat Yale and Georgetown to win the consolation draw in the Gold Bracket. In the Silver Bracket, Syracuse had a perfect day beating Drexel, Harvard, and Northeastern on their way to a win. Cornell rebounded to win the Silver Bracket consolation draw.

In addition to allowing teams to compete against other top teams, one component was to allow Sections to compete against each other. In the end, Mid-Atlantic won the Section award, after 4 of their teams finished in the top 6.
