2008 USTA Campus Championships: Midwest

Date:February 22nd-24th

Location:Madison, WI

Format:Modified WTT

Summary: written by Andy Rebhun

The Midwest Championships saw its toughest year of competition thus far in my three years attending the tournament. The tournament began with a bang as the teams decided to pay tribute to our section coordinator, Steve Wise with several gifts due to his dedication and support in making our league the best in the country. Steve was awarded with a trophy, several gift certificates, Wisconsin Club Tennis Apparel, and most importantly a huge round of applause from players and fans in attendance. Steve has spent so much time and energy in making our league the best in the country and goes above and beyond the call of duty.

The pool play was extremely competitive as many of the teams wanted revenge for previous losses in the season. As aforementioned the quality of competition has risen exponentially. Randell Golman Club Tennis Co President at University of Illinois stated “"The skill level has definitely improved from the past year, it was a thrill to see some under dogs take away the the top placers. All in all it was an exciting sectional tournament and can't wait to see what happens at Nationals." This year many teams brought second teams which were just as competitive as many of the A teams in the tournament.

During this year’s tournament it was definitely the year of the B Team as both the University of Wisconsin B Team and the University of Michigan B Team finished in the top 3. Tournament Sponsor Chipotle provided free burritos for all participants on Saturday afternoon. This year’s championship was extremely well run. Participants are all looking forward to the National Tournament in April as well as the Midwest Tournament next year.
