Texas A&M wins Fourth Straight National Championship

With Pool play finished on Thursday, the top teams in the country came prepared to play their best tennis in the Gold Braket. Although rain delayed the majority of the morning, play was underway by the afternoon.

The Round of 16 had some great matches. Texas A&M dropped 21 games in beating Miami (Ohio) but managed to pull through winning all of their sets. UCLA beat Michigan 26-19 to advance as well. Also in the top half of the draw, Florida edged out Texas 22-20, and Cornell dismissed Virginia Tech 26-16. In the bottom half, Penn State beat Stanford 25-20 to play another Northern California team, Cal-Berkeley who beat Georgia Tech 30-14. Colorado pulled out a 24-20 victory over USC, and Virginia beat Georgia 30-14.

The Quarterfinals consisted of eight Section Champions. In a great match-up, Florida edged Cornell 26-23 advancing to the Semi-finals to play Texas A&M who beat UCLA 30-20. Penn State rolled through Cal-Berkeley to set up a showdown with Virginia. Virginia beat Colorado 25-20.

On Saturday, play resumed as four Club Tennis powerhouses took the court in the semifinals. Texas A&M had a tough time with Florida, beating the 2003 Champion 25-19. Virginia had a somewhat easier time with Penn State, winning 25-15. This set up a rematch of last year’s final. The rumor was that the three-time defending champion wasn’t as strong as in prior years. Texas A&M quickly dismissed this rumor though, taking apart Virginia 30-15. Texas A&M has won four straight National Championships and five out of the last six.

Florida was able to take 3rd place with a 24-15 win over Penn State. Texas and Georgia battled through the consolation round, with Texas winning 27-15.
